Choir

The choir was founded in 1981 and has been under the direction of Martin te Laak since 1996. About 30 singers present ambitious choral works of sacred and secular nature of all epochs and styles. The choir is a member of the Association of German Concert Choirs (VDKC) and co-founder of the International Choir Biennale in Aachen.

The Aachener Kammerchor is characterised by a broad repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the avant-garde, including jazz and pop arrangements as well as folkloristic song settings, with the emphasis on a capella choral music in addition to occasionally instrumentally accompanied works.

The choir has repeatedly participated successfully in competitions and festivals. In 1998 they won first prize at the North Rhine-Westphalia Choir Competition. In 2010 the choir was category winner at the International Robert Schumann Choir Competition in Zwickau. In 2014 they won a first prize at the International Choir Competition for Sacred Music “Laudate Dominum” in Vilnius.

Through numerous concerts at home and abroad (Netherlands, Italy, France, Austria, Hungary, Egypt, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia) the choir has made a good name for itself. Its listeners always respond enthusiastically to the very varied repertoire.

Conductor

Martin te Laak studied church music at Düsseldorf Music University. After his A-exam, he received a scholarship from the German Music Council, which enabled him to study choral conducting at the Cologne Music University. Following this training, he attended various master classes, among others with Prof. Eric Ericson (Stockholm). While still a student, Martin te Laak founded the “Overbacher Singschule”, with whose choirs he won several prizes at the German Choir Competition and the State Choir Competition of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and which he directed until 2012. In 2012, he founded the “Jülicher Vokalwerkstatt” which he directed until 2015.

Martin te Laak

Martin te Laak has been the artistic director of the Aachen Chamber Choir since 1996 and has been a member of the choir management team of the Leverkusen Children’s and Youth Choir since 2015. As regional choir director of the “Sängerjugend” in the Choir Association of NRW, he has been taking care of the musical needs of children’s and youth choirs since 2010. He has been a lecturer in the field of choir director training at the NRW State Music Academy since 2010. His work is documented by a busy concert schedule at home and abroad as well as CD productions and radio recordings.
